Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiar joins the list of people who invariably figures in my blog posts once in a while — but every time I write about him, in fact every time I think about him, the quality that first comes to my mind is valor. He had such ungiving audacity when he dreamt, he dreamt mostly of things people in his days would consider — well — audacious.

He also affected my personal life. When I went to school, I sang the following verses of his in my neighborhood and received a prize (albeit 3rd) by a local celebrity. Back then, I did not know or appreciate the meaning. But when I read these verses now, it brings back to life every dead cell in my body. Because the verses below, I strongly suggest, are not that of a poet that writes about flowers and landscapes — not just that anyway. The verses below are that of a architect, an industrialist, a historian, a reformer, connoisseur and at all of that, a big visionary.

வெள்ளிப் பனிமலையின் மீதுலாவுவோம் — அடி

மேலைக் கடல்முழுதுங் கப்பல்விடுவோம்

பள்ளித் தலமனைத்துங் கோயில்செய்கு வோம் எங்கள்

பாரத தேசமென்று தோள் கொட்டுவோம்

முத்துக் குளிப்பதொரு தேன் கடலிலே

மொய்த்து வணிகர்பல நாட்டினர்வந்தே

நத்தி நடக்கினிய பொருள்கொணர்ந்து

நம்மருள் வேண்டுவது மேற்கரையிலே

This is part of a longer poem, with many more paragraphs — 13 to be specific. Different combinations were adapted to suit the 4–5 minute format that is commonplace in movies. For example, the poem above uses the paragraphs 1, 4 and 9. The following landmark song uses the paragraphs 5, 6 and 2.
